Statements From Officials

Jim Ryan, President of the University of Virginia
In President Jim Ryan’s letter opening the UVA 2020-2030 Sustainability Plan, he emphasizes the need for following through on Climate action. Ryan states “We should always consider our collective impact on our community and the world. But we need to do more than express our commitment to sustainability; we need to follow through on that commitment.” Since giving that statement and publishing the plan, UVA has made significant strides towards their goals (as seen in the most recent annual report)

The City Council urges sustainability and the goal of a “Green City”, of which it defines as “community with a vibrant urban forest, tree-lined streets, and lush green neighborhoods… an extensive natural trail system, along with healthy rivers and streams”. Additionally, the council’ vision stresses that Charlottesville tries “emphasize[s] recycling and reuse”, among other environmental protections.

Kristel Riddervold, Director of the Office of Sustainability
Recent restructuring of the Environmental Sustainability Commission and establishment of the Office of Sustainability demonstrates a resurgence in government efforts to meet climate goals. “Our perspective is everybody’s job is a climate or sustainability job. It’s just a matter of identifying what element that is,” says Riddervold.
