As a Virginia State Senator, McGuire voted against expansion of renewable energy tax credits in 2020. In 2023, he voted against pavement sealants containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in Virginia, in a bill that also established the Virginia Environmental Emergency Response Fund. He voted in favor of bipartisan efforts authorizing offshore wind far energy capacity and amendments of Virginia renewable energy codes. McGuire has also received the full support of President-elect Trump.
